Budgeting Basics
Understand categories, budgets, and how Monivera tracks your spending over time.
How budgets work
Monivera tracks spending by category within a monthly period. Each category can have an optional budget limit. The dashboard shows how much you have spent and how much remains.
Categories
Categories are organized into groups (e.g. Food, Transport, Entertainment). Each transaction is assigned to one category.
Automatic categorization
When you paste a bank alert or log a transaction via the iOS Shortcut, Monivera’s AI suggests a category from your own category list based on the merchant and alert text. You can change the suggestion before saving, or recategorize any transaction later.
Tracking periods
The budget resets on your budget start day (set in Settings → Budget Settings, default the 1st). In a shared household the start day applies to every member. Previous periods are accessible in the history view.
Transfers
Use the Transfer transaction type when moving money between your own accounts (e.g. savings to checking). Transfers are excluded from income and expense totals so they do not skew your budget.
